Along with the duration of the pandemic, this resultant fallout is the matter of utmost concern; the final number of affected human lives is still a matter of speculation and as usual this is a commendable effort Anil, by you, to not only assess and anticipate the human misery but also to draw the attention of like minded individuals. Thought provoking !

Dear Anil ,

A very interesting article on the 3 neighbouring countries!.There are many similarities in their development strategies. While India and Pakistan became independent in 1947, People's Republic of China was established in 1949.

All the three countries adopted Five Year Plans.Economic reforms took place in all the three countries( India_1991, Pakistan in 1988 and China in 1978).

But now China is the largest trading nation in the world and the second largest economy after USA.Its military capabilities and technical advances have made China a leading world power that shapes global affairs.

Pakistan on the other hand has numerous problems like poverty, unemployment, inflation, terrorism, illiteracy, huge public debt etc.Main reasons are , as you have pointed out political instability and strong military power.

Vijay kelkar played a key role in our economic reforms. He spoke about the economic freedom of people and the need to focus on long term solutions and not short term goals. One of the greatest thinkers and policy makers of india , he had also recommend the PPP model for infrastructure.

Looking forward to next article!

Anil u have the way and patience of untangling the kite maanjha. Our neighbour is so very unpredictable, it is outright stupidity to believe what's coming out of them. U-turn Khan well lesser said the better. Do we need to go that mile for a country bringing death and destruction to us?

Anil, Very good articulation of the ever so complex relationship. At a macro level, the Pak establishment clearly believes that terrorism as foreign policy pays - they are convinced that it has paid them huge dividend in Afghanistan. Till such time Biden is able to flip this around unambiguously (a big IF), we can reasonably say that their peace moves are noises (tactical) and not long term.

The pandemic has forced most countries to bring about revolutionary changes and initiate deep reforms in the economy, politics, foreign and security policy and strategic alignments. However, Pakistan has continued to comply with its current model due to the arrangement between the military and civilians. Therefore, there is a possibility that it is viewing covid 19 as an opportunity to recover the realtions between India and Pakistan by taking into consideration lifting off the ban on import of sugar and cotton from India. Nonetheless, doing so is not going to eliminate the need for a much needed deep structural reform in Pakistan.

Extremely horrifying situation. The poor has no safety net. Central and State Govts. instead of scoring Browne points over the distressed, must and should come together to provide solace. Anil u have presented the absolute correct ground reality. What if 2nd or 3rd wave goes out of control.... State elections, Khumb, I'd ... are more important than mere mortal lives. Lockdown required to give some breathing space to all the medical profession. They have been in high pressure situation for over a year now.

Pakistan's economy is in turmoil.

Inflation in Pakistan has reached at all time high in 3 yrs of Imran Khan govt. With their biggest festival month coming ahead, rising inflation is biggest worry of Pakistan Govt. Already there is a massive anger against him.

& I think that is what forced his govt to try to import stuff from India.

But when he had publicly & repeatedly said dt there could be no relation with India unless latter restores Kashmir's special status, he was always going to face serious opposition from public & media over any attempt to trade with India.

By aligning with China and Turkey, Pakistan has lost the free funding from USA and Saudi Arabia, respectively. China attaches some strings to financial assistance, everywhere in the world and Pakistan will not be an exception; which is being realized by the Pakistani establishment. The Biden administration has been ignoring Pakistan and their financial condition is rapidly deteriorating. Yesterday an Anti terrorism judge has been shot dead along with his family and the country is under threat from it's home grown terrorist outfits. The entire world will have to watch the situation carefully, as it has a store of nuclear weapons. Situation is not healthy and very unpredictable. A very important subject to write on this week, Anil and you have encapsuled the key points precisely.
