Interesting follow up to last week's article Anil, as more information on the subject has been shared. Successive US Presidents before Biden, have commented on the rapid growth of the middle class in India; hence this important development has been under discussion in knowledgeable groups. Added to the growth of the middle class in India, is their savings and small and sometimes substantial amounts of gold jewelry which can give an additional boost for investment when the mindset changes to utilize the hidden potential. FM in her budget has obliquely touched upon the hidden potential in the hands of the vast number of middle class people. A very well written and composed article Anil. 👏

Absolutely! Unfortunately, politicians from several parties still seek to stall things are good for people, playing one group against another

Actually, India has crossed the tipping point--my view. The last few years has bridged the trust quotient between the genuine "aam aadmi" and the government; they have been experiencing the pleasure of the state delivering on the promise of electricity, drinking water (stunned that till 2019 less than a fifth of India did not have access), cooking gas, housing and so on.

And they have begun to link it to the reform initiatives as "badlav". As a result, despite rabble rousing by a section of politicians, general public is not taking the bait--even while struggling under the fallout of covid-19 pandemic.

Maybe I am an optimist, but this is my take.

Thank you Sidhartha. Totally agree with you. And what it does is that it vindicates the faith that good can emerge with reform--social, political too.

Remember in the 1990s how the idea of reforms was bandied about as anti-people etc. So politicians were loath to be associated with it. So the Congress party threw Manmohan Singh, a technocrat, under the bus by making him the FM. If you remember he did put in his papers after he was targeted by other party members for an electoral loss.

Not sure who, but someone called this the moment of reforms by stealth.

Imagine today. The government is on turbo mode, busy transforming every sector. Freeing of the middle class from the colonial and Licence Raj, will pay it the best dividends. There will be tough questions, but then why not--we live in the largest democracy in the world.

Do keep sharing your thoughts.
